Quick Trip to Fort McHenry

Hello World,
Marcus and I braved the temperatures one fine day in December to visit Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Even though we both have lived in Maryland for all of our lives we found out that we have never visited this historic location. I was coming from Howard County and Marcus was coming from Hartford county so it really should have only taken us a max of 20 minutes to get there but that was not to be the case. Believe it or not I went thru the Fort McHenry tunnel three times before I figured out where the location is. For some reason I thought that the GPS directions from my trusty phone that has never let me down before was incorrect on this day. Only to find out later that she knew exactly what she was doing and apparently I did not. Marcus on the other hand was equally as lost but avoided the whole Fort McHenry toll debacle by just parking his car and trying to summon the force to guide him.

Fort McHenry sits on a peninsula and it was designed to block the British Naval Advance on Baltimore, Maryland. The fort was originally built in 1776 out of fear that the British would attack. But the attack did not come until the war of 1812 and the fort was attacked 2 years later. The defense of the fort was led by Major George Armistad. The defense of this fort during the battle of Baltimore in the fall of 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star Spangled Banner”. Fort McHenry was actually much larger than it is today in fact the majority of the peninsula where there are now homes and businesses used to be a part of the fort. In 1917 the fort was named General Hospital 2, the largest military hospital in the country with over 100 buildings which were used to help returning World War One Victims.

We plan on taking another trip back when it is a tad bit warmer so we can photograph what we missed.

  2. Hey guys, thanks for stopping by my blog, it gave me the occasion of discovering yours, and I like what I’m seeing! Love the b&w barrel in particular, the texture. Great pictures! Keep on shooting!

    • Trust us it was. The wind was blowing at roughly 20 to 30mph so we had to pull out the Tripods after awhile to avoid camera shake. There is a lot that we did not get to shoot just because of the 30 degree temps plus the wind coming off of the water made things slightly unbearable. We do intend to revisit this location hopefully in the spring or summer.
